Details

Classic outerwear—from the naval peacoat to the timeless trench coat—is an investment in enduring style. The integrity of these garments lies in their details, and no detail is more critical than the buttons that provide both function and character. Inferior plastic buttons that crack in the cold, fade with time, or break during cleaning can compromise the commanding presence of these essential coats.

The ButtonShop Anchor Insignia Button Set is the definitive solution for preserving the authenticity and durability of your finest outerwear. Proudly made in the USA, these buttons are forged from military-grade melamine, a material with a storied history of performance. Originally designed for the U.S. Military, this exact button meets the American military specifications that were proven in combat. It is the same class of thermoset material adopted by the U.S. Navy during WWII for its uniform buttons, chosen for one simple reason: it was virtually indestructible under the harshest conditions. This gives each button a substantial weight and a structural integrity that common plastics cannot replicate.

This comprehensive 36-piece collection has been curated to provide a complete, professional-grade outfitting for your coat. The set includes twelve large 32mm (50 Ligne / 1.25") buttons for the main double-breasted closure, twelve 15mm (25 Ligne / 0.60") buttons for the sleeves or pockets, and twelve 11mm (18 Ligne / 0.44") stay buttons. The inclusion of stay buttons is crucial for a garment of this weight; sewn on the interior behind the main buttons, they anchor the fastening and distribute stress, preventing tearing and ensuring a lifetime of secure closure. The crisp, embossed anchor insignia and deep, integral color are permanent features, while the polished glossy finish actively repels stains, ensuring the buttons maintain their like-new appearance through years of service.

Do not allow a failing detail to diminish your investment in a classic garment. Whether you are meticulously restoring a vintage naval-issue coat to its former glory or instilling a higher standard of quality into a modern trench coat, this set offers the authenticity, strength, and completeness required for a truly exceptional result.

Uncompromising Strength: The Science of Industrial-Grade Melamine

Beyond Plastic: Engineered for a Lifetime of Wear

The superior performance of these peacoat buttons begins at the molecular level, where they diverge fundamentally from common plastics like nylon or polyester. Unlike conventional buttons made from thermoplastics—polymers that can be melted and reformed, but which are also susceptible to heat and chemical degradation—ButtonShop buttons are crafted from melamine formaldehyde resin. This is a thermosetting plastic, meaning it undergoes an irreversible chemical bonding process during manufacturing. Under intense heat and pressure, the polymer chains form a dense, cross-linked, and permanently rigid structure, much like how raw ingredients are transformed into a ceramic glaze in a kiln. Once cured, a thermoset material will not melt; it maintains its integrity, hardness, and shape, providing a level of durability and stability that thermoplastics, by their very nature, cannot achieve. This meticulous process transforms a simple fastener into a permanent, engineered component designed to last the entire lifecycle of a high-quality garment, ensuring it feels as solid and substantial on its hundredth wear as it did on its first.

A Legacy of Naval Heritage: Military Specification & Authenticity

From WWII Decks to Modern Outerwear

The choice of melamine for these buttons is a direct homage to the coat's naval origins, backed by a history of performance in the most demanding environments imaginable: active combat. These are not merely "military-style"; they are manufactured to the exact American military specifications developed during World War II when the U.S. Navy sought materials that could withstand the rigors of life at sea. They first adopted melamine for its shipboard tableware because it was 80% lighter than ceramic and virtually shatterproof. Its success was so profound that by 1942, it was adopted for uniform buttons. Melamine buttons were found to be cheaper, withstood harsh military laundering far better than natural materials, and simply would not break under the physical stresses of duty and combat. This historical precedent makes melamine the most authentic and functionally superior material for a garment with naval DNA. Each button in this set carries that legacy of battle-tested reliability, offering a level of toughness that was vetted not in a lab, but on the decks of warships and in the field of battle

Permanent Detail: The Science of Chalking Resistance

Locked-In Color and Crisp Insignia for a Flawless Appearance

A common failure point for lesser buttons, particularly on outerwear exposed to the elements, is "chalking." This is a form of surface degradation caused by long-term exposure to UV light and weather. This process breaks down the polymer binder in the material, releasing pigment and filler particles to the surface. The result is a dull, powdery residue that permanently diminishes the button's color and sheen, giving a coat a tired and aged appearance. ButtonShop melamine buttons are formulated for exceptional chalking resistance. The stable, cross-linked structure of the thermoset resin is inherently resistant to UV degradation. More importantly, because the color is an integral part of the resin matrix itself—not a surface dye or coating—it cannot fade, peel, or wash out. This ensures the buttons maintain their deep, classic color and that the embossed anchor insignia remains sharp and well-defined for decades.

Resilience in Care: Superior Chemical & Heat Resistance

Engineered to Withstand Dry Cleaning and Harsh Weather

A coat's buttons are repeatedly exposed to harsh conditions, from winter weather to the chemicals used in professional cleaning. These melamine buttons are specifically engineered to withstand this cycle of care without compromise. The curing process creates a hard, non-porous surface that is highly resistant to a wide range of chemicals, including the potent organic solvents used in professional dry cleaning. This dense, glossy surface acts as a formidable barrier, preventing contaminants from penetrating and causing stains, which allows the buttons to be easily wiped clean and maintain their original luster. Furthermore, the material's thermoset nature gives it excellent thermal stability, allowing it to easily tolerate the high temperatures of commercial steam pressing (up to 248°F / 120°C) without any risk of warping, melting, or losing its structural integrity. This robust resilience ensures the buttons remain pristine through countless cleaning cycles, protecting your investment in fine outerwear

The Complete System: The Importance of the Stay Button

A Mark of Quality Tailoring and Secure Fastening

The inclusion of twelve 11mm stay buttons in this set is a critical feature that speaks to a deep understanding of quality tailoring. A stay button is a small, flat button sewn onto the interior of a garment, directly behind a larger, exterior button. Its function is to distribute the stress of fastening across a wider area of the fabric. On a well-constructed garment like a peacoat or trench coat, this is not a trivial detail, especially with fabrics like wool or dense cottons. Without a stay button, the repeated pulling and stress on the main button can cause the fabric to stretch, distort, or even tear over time. By providing a counter-anchor, the stay button protects the fabric, ensures the main button sits correctly without pulling, and provides a much more secure and durable fastening. Offering a complete system of main, cuff, and stay buttons ensures that a restoration or upgrade is not merely cosmetic, but structurally sound.
